Few yachts offered to the market today carry a history quite like Freyja III. Built in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1949, this remarkable wooden 55-Square-Metre-class keel sloop was designed by noted Swedish yacht designer Tord Sundén and constructed by Carl Andersson. Measuring approximately 40’6” overall while carrying an exceptionally narrow 8’6” beam and deep 6’9” draft, Freyja III embodies the long, elegant and performance-oriented proportions that defined some of the finest Scandinavian sailing yachts of the post-war era. Her slender hull, varnished mahogany construction and graceful profile make her immediately recognizable as something far removed from a conventional production sailboat.

What makes Freyja III particularly compelling is her documented historical story. Period Canadian published material reports that she was designed for King Gustaf V of Sweden as a royal day-sailing yacht. The Jones family acquired Freyja III in 1964 and raced her for a number of years before undertaking an extensive restoration. By 1983 she was being exhibited at the prestigious Wooden Boat Show in Newport, Rhode Island, where historical accounts describe significant recognition for her beauty and craftsmanship. She subsequently received honours including People’s Choice and Best in Show, and later called the Royal Canadian Yacht Club home. Period documentation describes her construction as varnished Honduras mahogany over oak and angle-iron frames and refers to more than 400 pieces of polished brass aboard.

Today, Freyja III survives as a rare preservation and restoration opportunity for the next custodian of this historically significant yacht. Her hull, traditional interior joinery, period hardware, cockpit, machinery, instrumentation and collection of surviving antique and classic boat-show plaques remain aboard, while her exceptionally long and narrow hull form still clearly displays the fast Scandinavian cruiser/racer pedigree for which she was created.
